My Husband Told Me Nobody Cared About My Day — Then Our Son Heard Me Answer His Fiancée

My son looked at his father for a long moment and said, “Dad, let her finish.” The whole table went quiet. His fiancée looked between us, confused, and my husband laughed like it was nothing. But my son didn’t laugh. He told him he’d heard that sentence before, and then he said something I hadn’t expected to hear after eighteen years of silence.

He told his fiancée that when he was eleven, he’d watched me stop talking at dinner because of what his father had said. He remembered sitting there with his fork in his hand, waiting for someone to tell me it was a joke. Nobody did. He said that after that night, he started asking me about my day when his father wasn’t around because he didn’t want me to think nobody cared.

I started crying before I could stop myself. My husband tried to interrupt him, but our son held up his hand and told him to let him finish. Then he said, “You taught me something that night, Dad. You taught me exactly what kind of husband I never want to be.”

His fiancée reached across the table and took my hand. My son looked at me and apologized for not saying anything back then. I told him he was eleven and there was nothing he could have done. Then he shook his head and said there was one thing he had done — and he’d kept it for eighteen years because he was waiting until he was old enough to tell his father why he’d never forgotten that dinner…
