My Husband Joked for 22 Years That I’d Be Lost Without Him — Then His Stroke Forced Me to Open His Laptop

The first thing I found was a spreadsheet with my name on it. Not our names. Mine. It went back almost twenty years and listed every paycheck I’d ever deposited, every household bill, and a column labeled “available.” The numbers in that column were much larger than anything I remembered seeing in our checking account.

I called the bank because I assumed I was misunderstanding it. The woman asked me to verify some information and then told me there were three accounts connected to our address. I knew about one. The other two had been open since 2006, and one of them received an automatic transfer every payday — from my salary.

I sat beside his hospital bed that evening and asked him about the accounts. He couldn’t speak properly yet, but he understood me. I showed him the spreadsheet on my phone. He closed his eyes. Then he pointed toward the drawer where the nurse had put his wallet and kept pointing until I opened it.
