The note was written on the same kind of paper Harold had always used, folded twice and placed beneath the cash. It said the money wasn’t an offering and wasn’t meant to be recorded under his name anymore. I read it twice before I understood what he was asking me to do. He wanted me to put the entire eleven hundred dollars into a specific account the church hadn’t used in years, one that had been closed shortly after his funeral.
I checked the old records because I assumed there had been some mistake. The account belonged to a small building fund Harold had started decades earlier, back when the church was raising money for repairs. The records showed that he’d stopped contributing to it shortly before he died, and the remaining balance had eventually been transferred elsewhere. But the note included an account number I recognized from the old ledger, followed by a date from two months after Harold’s funeral.
I asked the pastor about it without mentioning the envelopes. He told me Harold had once asked him to keep something private and that he’d promised not to discuss it unless Harold’s family came forward. I asked whether Harold had left instructions about money after his death, and the pastor looked genuinely surprised. Then he asked me why I was asking. I showed him the note, and he sat down without saying anything.
He finally told me Harold had visited him three days before he died and had asked one strange question: whether the church still kept records of anonymous donations. Harold had then handed him a sealed envelope and said, “If they ever find out where this came from, they’ll know why I kept coming back.” The pastor said he’d never opened it because Harold had specifically told him not to. Then he looked at the envelope I’d brought and said the handwriting on it was not Harold’s.
