He Finally Asked Me What She Said

He looked at me and said, “She knew I wasn’t there, didn’t she?” I couldn’t answer right away because for four years I had carried that eleven-minute secret like it belonged to both of us. Then I told him that she had asked for him, and that I had held her hand and told her he was right beside her. He closed his eyes and started crying before I could say anything else. I told him she smiled when I said his name, and that she whispered, “Tell him I know.” He opened his eyes and stared at me like I had just changed the ending of something he had been punishing himself for all these years.

Then he asked why I had never told him. I said because I knew he would have wanted every detail, and I was afraid the truth would become another thing for him to regret. He sat down at the kitchen table and covered his face with both hands. After a long silence, he said, “I thought she died thinking I was too scared to come in.” I told him she didn’t die believing that, because the last thing she asked me was whether he was close, and I told her yes. He cried harder when I told him that she squeezed my hand after I said it. Then he whispered, “So she knew I loved her?”

I told him, “She knew before you ever got to the hospital.” He didn’t speak for several minutes, and neither did I. Finally, he asked me what her exact last words were, and I realized there was one part I had never told anyone. I leaned across the table and said, “She told me not to let you spend the rest of your life thinking you failed her.” He looked at me, and for the first time in four years, I saw something other than guilt on his face. It was grief, but it was the kind that finally had somewhere to go.
