He Wanted My Brothers to Hear the Offer

The man who made the lower offer told me he had kept a copy of every document from the sale. He said he wanted my brothers to know that I had not lied when I said there was no other way to save the land from foreclosure. There had been another way, but it would have meant taking $111,000 less and keeping the property in the family as farmland. I told him my brothers already hated me and probably wouldn’t believe anything he said. He replied, “They don’t have to believe you. They can hear it from the person who made the offer.” Then he asked if I was willing to let him tell them exactly what happened.

I agreed, but I didn’t tell my brothers first. He contacted them himself and showed them the original offer, including the date and the amount. He also showed them the message I had sent saying I needed to close quickly because my son’s treatment couldn’t wait. My brothers called me that night, and neither of them spoke for almost a minute. Finally, one of them asked why I hadn’t told them the truth. I said because I knew they would ask me to choose the land over my son, and I couldn’t bear hearing them say it out loud. There was another silence, and then my younger brother said, “We would never have asked you to do that.”

I told him they had spent six years treating me like I had betrayed the family, so I had stopped believing they understood what was at stake. He said they thought I had simply wanted the higher offer and had used foreclosure as an excuse. Then he asked me the question I had secretly been waiting for since 2020: “Is he okay?” I told him my son was alive, working, and had just started planning his wedding. My brother started crying and said, “Then we lost the land, but we didn’t lose everything.” Before we hung up, he asked if I would take him to see my son. I said yes, but I warned him that my son might not forgive what happened between the brothers. He replied, “I don’t need him to forgive me yet. I just need him to know why his father chose him.”
