I Betrayed My Wife and Told My Daughter Before I Told Her

I betrayed my wife and told my daughter before I told her. She was twenty-six, and I needed somebody on my side before the ground moved beneath me. So I picked my own child. I told her in a restaurant because I knew she couldn’t make a scene. I put a twenty-six-year-old in the middle of my marriage to make my own confession easier, and then I made her carry it alone.

She kept my secret for four months. Four months of Sunday dinners with her mother while carrying something she never should have had to know. She lost weight. Her mother noticed and worried about her, never knowing why her daughter suddenly seemed so distant. I told myself I had trusted my daughter. The truth is uglier: I had transferred the weight of my betrayal from myself onto someone who loved both of us.

She’s thirty-four now. She’s civil with me and nothing more, and she has never told her mother how long she knew. I used to think her silence meant she had forgiven me. Now I understand it differently. She wasn’t protecting me. She was protecting her mother from the pain of knowing that I’d made our daughter carry something that belonged between two adults.

Her own daughter was born in March. My wife stayed for two weeks to help, and on the last night the two of them sat together after everyone else had gone to bed. I wasn’t there. The next morning my daughter looked at me differently. Later she told me her mother had said something that finally made her understand what those four months had cost her. “Your father didn’t just betray me,” her mother had said. “He made you carry his betrayal before I even knew about it.”
