I Betrayed My Wife With Someone She Introduced Me To

I betrayed my wife with someone she introduced me to. Her friend from the choir. My wife brought her home for dinner in 2016 because she thought we’d get along, and she was right. For years, my wife told the story as a joke: “I’m a good matchmaker. They’ve been friends ever since.” She had no idea she had introduced me to the woman who would become the biggest secret of our marriage.

It lasted four years and ended badly in 2020, with a scene in a parking lot that I still hear in my head. The affair was over, but the friendship remained part of my wife’s world for another year. My wife believes she gave me a friendship. That’s her contribution to the story, and she’s proud of it. She thinks she brought two people together who genuinely liked each other, never realizing how completely I betrayed the trust behind that introduction.

The woman left the choir in 2021, and my wife never knew why. She was genuinely sad about it. She kept asking whether something had happened, whether she’d done something wrong, whether her friend was upset with her. I watched her search for an explanation while knowing exactly what had happened. I let my wife believe she had lost a friend for reasons she couldn’t understand, because telling her the truth would have destroyed more than my marriage.

In September, they ran into each other at a funeral. They talked for a long time, and my wife came home unusually quiet. She sat at the kitchen table and told me her friend had apologized for disappearing and said there was something she had never been able to explain. Then my wife looked at me and said, “She told me she couldn’t stay close to me because being around me reminded her of something she was ashamed of.” I felt the room go cold. My wife stared at me for a few seconds and then asked the only question that mattered: “Why did she look at you when she said it?”
