I Found a Motel Receipt in My Husband’s Glovebox — and the Woman From 1998 Called Him Again

She called because she was dying, and she wanted Steve to meet the nineteen-year-old boy who had spent his whole life believing another man was his father. Steve said the boy had found an old photograph and started asking questions about the dates, and his mother finally couldn’t carry the lie anymore. “She said he’s coming to see me tomorrow,” Steve told me. “And she wants you to know before he gets here that I never knew he existed.” I asked why the motel receipt was from the same town, and he said he’d gone there because she had asked him to come alone.

I asked him whether the boy was his. Steve didn’t answer immediately. He looked at the receipt, then at me, and said he had spent twenty-seven years believing the affair in 1998 was the worst thing he’d ever done. He’d never told me she’d contacted him again, because every time she did, she was asking for something different — money, silence, then finally a meeting. The $3,100 wasn’t for the motel. It was money he’d been sending her for years because she had threatened to tell the boy who his real father might be. “I wasn’t paying her to keep quiet,” he said. “I was paying because I was afraid the truth would destroy him.”

Then he opened the glovebox again and pulled out a photograph I’d never seen. The boy was standing beside his mother, nineteen years old, with Steve’s eyes. On the back was a date from March and one sentence in her handwriting: “He deserves to know why you disappeared, but he doesn’t deserve to find out from me.” Steve said the boy was coming to our house the next morning because his mother had given him our address. I looked at the divorce papers I’d prepared in 2019 and realized I had been waiting seven years for the wrong ending. Then Steve said, “There’s one thing I haven’t told you about what happened in 1998 — and if he comes tomorrow, you’ll hear it from him first.”
