I FOUND HIS BIRTH MOTHER NINE YEARS AGO — AND NEVER TOLD HIM

I found her obituary the next morning and read it three times. She had died peacefully in February, and the notice mentioned a town only forty minutes from where my son lives. I called the service that had helped us search years ago and asked whether they still had the original contact information. They did, and they also had a note from 2016 saying she had agreed to be contacted if he ever wanted to meet her. I had spent nine years telling myself that keeping the file closed was an act of protection. Now I wasn’t sure whether I’d protected him or simply made the decision for him.

I opened the old folder that night and found everything exactly where I’d left it. There were photographs, letters, medical information, and one handwritten page from his birth mother that I had never shown him. She had written that she hoped he was safe and happy, and that she would never ask him to forgive her for the circumstances of his birth. I sat at the kitchen table until midnight reading it. Then I realized something that made my stomach drop: she had included an address where she could always be reached. I had known where she was all along, and my son had spent nine years believing nobody knew.

The next morning I asked him to come over alone. I told him I had something I’d been afraid to tell him, and I handed him the folder without explaining what was inside. He read the first page, looked at me, and asked why I had waited so long. I told him the truth—that when he was nineteen, I was terrified a meeting would destroy the life he’d finally built, and then every year I found another reason to wait. He cried, but he didn’t leave. Then he looked at the obituary in my hand and said, “Mom, I wasn’t looking for her because I wanted to change my life—I was looking because I wanted to know where I came from.”
