I Said the Address Out Loud Before I Could Stop Myself

I heard myself say it out loud before I could stop: “Naples?” His attorney paused, and my husband turned toward me so quickly that his chair scraped the floor. I told the judge about the Christmas card and the address, and his attorney immediately said it was probably a former business contact. Then the judge asked whether I had the card with me.

I did. I handed it over, and the address matched the one on a bank statement his attorney had submitted that morning. The statement was for an account I had never seen before, opened in 2024 — the same year his income supposedly dropped by half. My husband suddenly stopped looking at me and started looking at his attorney.

The judge ordered the statement marked as evidence and asked my husband whether he had any explanation for the account. He said it was “complicated,” which was the first honest thing he’d said all morning. Then his attorney leaned over and whispered something to him, and my husband finally looked at me and said, “You weren’t supposed to know about that address.”
