I asked why an old form was dated the same week he had promised me our marriage was starting over, and he shrugged like I was being dramatic. I asked him who she was, and for the first time that afternoon, he didn’t have an answer ready. He reached for the paper, but I pulled it back and told him I was taking it to my attorney. His voice changed immediately, and he said there was nothing to worry about because the change had never been finalized. I believed him for about thirty seconds — until I called the insurance company myself.
The woman on the phone wouldn’t tell me much, but she confirmed one thing: the beneficiary change had been processed. She also said there was a second policy attached to the same account, and that one had been changed three months earlier. I hung up, looked at my husband, and asked, “How many policies did you change without telling me?” He went silent, and that silence told me I had finally asked the right question.
