I’ve Been Kind to My Wife Every Day for Twenty-Seven Years—and I’ve Never Once Been Warm

I’ve been kind to my wife every day for twenty-seven years, and I have never once been warm. There’s a difference, and it took me twenty of those years to find the words for it. Kind is a policy. Warm is a temperature. I followed the policy flawlessly. I opened doors, remembered dates, handled problems, and never raised my voice in our house. I gave her everything a good husband is supposed to give, except the one thing she could actually feel.

She has spent twenty-seven years standing next to a perfectly well-behaved man, wondering why she feels so lonely. There was never anything she could point to. I wasn’t cruel. I didn’t cheat. I didn’t disappear for nights. I did everything right in ways that made her question herself instead. When a woman can’t find a single thing to accuse her husband of, but still feels unloved, the only explanation left is that something must be wrong with her.

That’s the cruelty of what I’ve done. It isn’t the things I did to her. It’s what I made her think about herself in the complete absence of anything she could blame me for. She changed the way she talked, the way she dressed, the way she asked for affection. Every time she wondered why I seemed distant, I gave her another reasonable explanation. Work. Tiredness. Stress. Nothing she could argue with. I turned my emotional absence into evidence that she was asking for too much.

Her friend asked her at a party in June what our secret was. My wife smiled and said something I’ve been turning over in my head ever since. She said, “There isn’t a secret. He’s just kind to me.” Her friend laughed and said that was clearly more than most people had. My wife looked down at her glass and quietly replied, “Kind isn’t the same as being wanted.” Then she went home and, for the first time in twenty-seven years, asked me whether I had ever actually been happy to see her walk through the door. I couldn’t answer quickly enough.
