And my husband — fourteen years of saying nothing — set down his glass and looked directly at his brother.
He said, “You have told my son a story about my life that isn’t yours to tell.” His brother tried to laugh and said everyone knew the job had been the biggest opportunity of his career. My husband shook his head and said the opportunity was real, but so was the decision to leave it. He told him that our child needed treatment, the company was relocating, and he had decided that being present mattered more than a title. Then he turned to my son and said, “Your mother didn’t take anything from me. I chose to come home.”
My brother-in-law became defensive and said he had only wanted my son to understand what his father had sacrificed. My husband said, “Then you should have told him what I actually sacrificed, not invented someone to blame for it.” My son was crying by then, and he asked his father whether he had ever regretted leaving that job. My husband looked at him for a long moment and said, “I regret that I let my brother tell you otherwise for so long.” Then he told him that some decisions cost you money, but that doesn’t mean they cost you happiness.
My brother-in-law left the table without saying goodbye. Later that night, my son came into our room and apologized to me for believing what he’d heard. I told him he didn’t owe me an apology for trusting an adult who had repeated the same story for years. My husband sat beside him and explained exactly why he left the company, what happened afterward, and how our life changed because of it. Before my son went upstairs, he hugged both of us and said, “I’m glad you chose us.” My husband waited until he was gone, looked at me, and said quietly, “I should have defended you fourteen years ago.”
