“He has dementia, he’d sign anything you put in front of him.” That’s what my brother told me in 2022, when he said he was taking over all of Dad’s paperwork because he was “protecting him.” I was exhausted, so I let him handle it and never thought much about the documents afterward. Last month, I requested copies of everything from 2022 onward, something any beneficiary could do. There were eleven documents in total, and nine were dated after Dad’s diagnosis.
But two of them were different. They were dated before the diagnosis, and both had something written in Dad’s handwriting that I recognized immediately. One was a financial authorization, and the other changed who was supposed to receive something Dad had always told all of us would be divided equally. I called my brother and asked why Dad had signed them before anyone knew he was sick, and he immediately stopped talking.
Then I noticed the dates on the signatures weren’t the strangest part. Both documents had been witnessed by the same person, and that person wasn’t my brother. I tracked her down and asked if she remembered what happened that day, expecting her to say she didn’t. Instead, she told me she remembered Dad looking directly at my brother before signing and saying something that completely changed what I thought had happened…
