My Brother’s Wife Has Been Telling People My Husband Hits Me

My daughter came straight out of the kitchen and said it in front of everybody: “No. He has never frightened me. And if you were actually worried about Mom, you would have asked her instead of asking me.” My brother’s wife froze. My brother told my daughter she didn’t understand what she was talking about. She looked at him and said, “I understand perfectly. You let your wife tell people my father hurts my mother for seven years, and neither of you ever thought to ask her whether it was true.”

My husband hadn’t said a word. He was sitting beside me, looking more confused than angry. My daughter turned toward him and apologized. She said she had spent years wondering why people sometimes looked at him differently at family gatherings. She said she finally understood when her aunt pulled her aside and asked whether her father had ever frightened her. Then she told everyone that her father had never raised his voice at her mother, never threatened her, and had spent nineteen years making her feel safe. My brother’s wife started crying and said she had only been trying to protect me.

My mother finally spoke. She said she had asked me three years earlier if I was safe because she’d heard the same story from three different relatives. She said I’d laughed because I thought it was absurd, but I hadn’t realized how far the story had traveled. My brother’s wife insisted she’d never actually said my husband hit me. My daughter answered, “You didn’t have to. You kept asking questions designed to make everyone else say it for you.” My brother looked at his wife and asked her why she’d never once spoken to me directly. She couldn’t answer.

Then my husband took my hand and told my brother that he wasn’t angry about people believing something untrue about him nearly as much as he was angry that his wife had turned our daughter into the person who had to defend him. My daughter said she was nineteen and old enough to stop protecting adults from the consequences of their own words. My brother’s wife finally admitted she’d started the rumor because she didn’t like how close my husband and I were and had convinced herself there had to be something wrong behind it. My husband looked at her and said, “You didn’t uncover something terrible about our marriage. You invented something terrible about it, and then waited for our daughter to grow up enough to hear the damage.”
