My Cousin Accidentally Sent Me A Photo Of Her New House — And My Missing Daughter Was Standing In The Window (PART 2)

…your ex-husband, Gary Dunn. He’s been wanted for tax fraud for nine years.”

Gary. My daughter Amy’s father. We’d divorced when she was twelve. He lost custody after a judge found he’d been hiding money and threatening me. Eleven years ago, Amy vanished. Gary had an alibi. Police never connected the two.

The detective, Ray Moreno, explained. Gary had been living under a false name and running a business through my cousin Melissa’s accounts. The FBI had been watching the farmhouse for months. They’d seen a young woman there. They’d assumed she was Melissa’s employee.

“Don’t contact anyone,” Ray said. “We’ll move quickly now.”

Two days later, at dawn, federal agents and Ray’s team went into the farmhouse. Gary was arrested in the kitchen. Melissa was arrested in her bedroom.

Ray called me at six forty a.m. “She’s safe. She’s asking for you.”

I drove to Vermont in five hours. Amy was sitting in the back of an ambulance wrapped in a blanket. She was twenty-eight. She had the same scar above her eyebrow and the same silver necklace.

She told me, slowly, over many weeks, what had happened. Gary had convinced her at seventeen that I’d been lying to her about him, that I wanted to send her away. He picked her up after school, promised it would be a short trip and never brought her back. Over the years, he told her I’d stopped looking. That I’d moved. That I didn’t want her anymore.

“I believed him,” she said. “I didn’t know you were still waiting.”

I showed her the box of birthday cards I’d written her every year. Eleven of them. She read every single one in my kitchen and cried. Then she said, “Can I live here for a while?” She’s still here. Her room is exactly the way she left it.
