My Daughter Asked Me To Babysit For One Night — Then She Sent Me A Photo From Another Country (PART 2)

…filed for emergency custody, claiming I’m unstable and have abandoned them. Please don’t believe the photo. It’s two years old. I’m not in Mexico. I’m twenty minutes away.”

I read the letter three times, standing in my kitchen while my grandchildren watched cartoons.

My daughter, Emily, had been married to Brian for ten years. I’d always found him a little controlling, but I’d never seen anything worse. Emily had hidden it well.

Her letter told me everything. For years, Brian had controlled their money, monitored her phone and threatened that if she ever left, he’d take the kids and make sure she never saw them again. Last month, she found emails between him and a lawyer. He was planning to file for sole custody this weekend, using her “mental health” as the reason. He’d also emptied their savings account.

So Emily made a plan with a domestic violence advocate. She brought the children to me, where Brian wouldn’t think to look. She sent the old beach photo from her phone, knowing Brian tracked her messages, so he’d believe she’d run off to Mexico. She was actually at a women’s shelter in town, meeting with a lawyer.

The plane ticket and hotel reservation weren’t for Mexico. They were for a hotel in our own city, booked under my name, where the children and I could stay safely for a few nights.

At the bottom, she’d written the shelter’s phone number. I called it. Emily picked up on the first ring, sobbing. “Mom, are they okay?”

They were okay.

Brian did file for emergency custody on Monday, claiming she’d abandoned the kids and fled the country. Emily’s lawyer showed the judge the original photo’s date, her shelter intake records and Brian’s emails. The judge denied his petition and granted Emily a protective order instead.

Emily and the kids lived with me for six months while the divorce went through. She found a job, then an apartment. Last summer, she took the children to Mexico for real. She sent me a new photo from the beach. This time, all three of them were in it.
