My Daughter-In-Law Said I Was Too Embarrassing For The Family Christmas Photo. The Photographer Put Down His Camera And Asked One Question. (PART 2)

…to reconsider the lease.”

The room went silent. My daughter-in-law, Courtney, had been about to sign a lease on that house. It was larger than their current one, near the best school in town, and the rent was far below market price.

“I bought it to rent to a family who needed a good home,” the photographer said. His name was Marcus. “That was the whole point. Somebody once did that for me.”

I remembered Marcus now. He was seven, angry and silent, the boy who wouldn’t sleep unless someone sat beside his bed. I’d worked nights at the shelter. I sat beside him for almost four months, until a family adopted him. I’d never forgotten him either.

Courtney started to apologize, too fast. My son, Ben, finally looked at me. “Mom,” he said quietly. “Come back. Please.”

I didn’t want my grandchildren to lose a good home because of their mother’s words. So I asked Marcus to rent them the house anyway.

He thought about it for a long time. Then he agreed, on one condition: that Courtney apologize to me, sincerely, in front of the children.

She did. It wasn’t easy for her. But she did.

Then Marcus took the photo. I stood in the middle, in my late husband’s green sweater, surrounded by my grandchildren. Courtney stood beside me.

Marcus framed a copy and gave it to me for free. He comes to Sunday dinner now, every few weeks. My grandchildren call him Uncle Marcus. He still sits beside the youngest one until she falls asleep.
