My Daughter-In-Law Said I Was Too Poor To Attend Her Baby Shower. Then Her Father Recognized My Name On The House Deed (PART 2)

…”an account for my daughter’s online boutique. A business she told me was doing very well.”

Her father, Richard Langford, put the papers down and rubbed his eyes. He was a successful man, and I could tell he wasn’t used to feeling embarrassed.

The story came together slowly over that lunch. My late husband, Tom, and I bought the house in 1989 and later placed it in a family trust, with me as a trustee and our son, Daniel, as the eventual beneficiary. We let Daniel and his wife, Brooke, live there after their wedding. Brooke had told her father the house belonged to Daniel outright. Then she used that story, and a forged copy of my signature, to take out a $600,000 loan against the property to save her failing boutique. Richard had “bought” the house for them from a seller who never existed, paying off part of that loan without realizing it.

“She told me she wanted the house in her own name for security,” Richard said quietly. “I believed her.”

I asked one thing: “Does Daniel know?”

Richard called Brooke that evening. Daniel answered. He knew nothing. He’d thought the boutique was doing well too.

What happened next surprised me. Richard didn’t defend his daughter. He drove to their house with his lawyer, sat her down and made her tell Daniel everything. Then he paid off the remaining loan from his own money so the trust and the house would be safe, on one condition: Brooke would personally apologize to me and repay him over time.

Brooke came to my apartment the next week. She was very pregnant and very quiet. She apologized for the loan, for the signature and for calling me too poor to come to her shower. “I was ashamed of my business failing,” she said, “so I tried to make you the embarrassing one.”

I told her I’d spent thirty years feeding children in a school cafeteria, and that there’s nothing embarrassing about making sure people are fed.

I went to the baby shower. Richard sat next to me. My granddaughter was born a month later. Brooke asked me to be the first person to hold her after Daniel. Her name is Ellen, after my mother.
