My Daughter Said the One Thing I Had Been Afraid to Say

The officer crouched beside her and asked what happened. She looked at me first, then at him, and said, “It wasn’t an accident. Dad did it on purpose.” I felt the air leave the room. For four years, I had taught her that what happened in our house was something we didn’t talk about, something we explained away, something we survived quietly.

The officer asked her how she knew. She pointed toward the kitchen and said, “Because he told Mommy not to tell anyone, and then Mommy always says she fell.” She was nine. She remembered every excuse I’d made better than I did. I wanted to interrupt her, but for once I knew that protecting the story meant protecting the person who had hurt us.

After the officers left with her father, my daughter came and sat beside me. She didn’t say “I told you so.” She just asked, “Are you going to say it was an accident again?” I shook my head. “No,” I told her. “Not ever again.”
