My aunt looked directly at my ex-husband’s new wife and said, “You met her twice. I know because I was at both.” The woman’s smile disappeared. My ex-husband immediately told my aunt she was confused, but my aunt had already opened the notebook she carried everywhere. She had written down the dates, the places, and exactly what she had overheard each time. Then she turned to me and said, “There’s something your mother never told you about the second meeting.”
The first meeting had happened years before my mother died, when my ex-husband was still married to me. The second happened much later, after our divorce, and that was the part that made my stomach drop. My aunt remembered my mother asking her not to mention either encounter because she was afraid of what would happen if I found out. But my aunt had kept the details anyway. She remembered the name my ex-husband had used when he introduced the woman, and it was not the name she was using at the funeral.
Then my aunt pulled one final page from the notebook and placed it in front of me. It was a copy of a note my mother had written shortly after that second meeting. At the bottom, my mother had added one sentence: “If he brings her around after I’m gone, don’t let him tell my daughter she’s imagining things.” I looked across the room at my ex-husband, and for the first time that day, he looked genuinely frightened. Then my aunt told me what my mother had witnessed that night—and why she had spent the last years of her life quietly keeping evidence.
