My Father-In-Law Accidentally Sent Me The Receipt For A $40,000 Gift — And The Recipient Was My Best Friend (PART 2)

…the neonatal unit at midnight, without permission, to save his life.”

I asked the photographer, Mr. Hill, to send me every picture he had. They told a story I’d never known.

My youngest son, Sam, was born with a rare heart defect. The hospital told us he needed surgery, but they couldn’t do it for three days. I was sedated after a difficult delivery. My husband, terrified and overwhelmed, agreed to wait.

My father-in-law, Richard, didn’t. He found a specialist at a children’s hospital two hours away who said Sam might not survive three days. Rachel was a nurse at our hospital then. Richard asked her to help him move Sam that night, against hospital policy, in a transport ambulance he’d paid for himself.

Rachel lost her job for it. Sam had surgery at dawn. He survived. He’s fifteen now and plays basketball.

Richard had paid a photographer to document everything in case there was ever a lawsuit. The $40,000 wasn’t hush money. It was the last payment on the loan Rachel had taken out to retrain as a nurse after she was fired. Richard had been paying it off for fifteen years.

“This should keep her quiet until the family reunion” was Richard being Richard. He’d planned to tell the whole family the story at the reunion and thank Rachel publicly.

I called Rachel and apologized. She cried. She said she’d never told me because she was afraid I’d think she’d overstepped.

At the family reunion, Richard stood up, raised his glass and told everyone what Rachel had done. Then Sam walked over to Rachel and hugged her. He’d just learned that his godmother had literally carried him out of a hospital to save his life.
