MY HUSBAND LAUGHED WHEN I TOLD HIM I WANTED A DIVORCE (PART 2)

…”He didn’t die, Victor. He was in a coma in Lisbon for five weeks. You just never checked.”

The man in the photograph was Paul Dresner, my husband’s first business partner. They’d started the company together in 2014. In 2019, Paul had a heart attack while on vacation in Portugal. My husband told everyone he’d died. He held a memorial at the office. He gave a beautiful speech.

Then, while Paul was in a hospital bed in Lisbon, unable to speak, my husband filed paperwork transferring Paul’s half of the company to himself. He used a signature from an old contract. He told the board Paul had signed it “before the trip, as part of his estate planning.”

Paul woke up. It took him two years to learn to walk again, and another year to come home. By then, his company was gone, his name was off the door, and everyone believed he was dead. He was too sick and too broke to fight it.

I found him by accident. Eighteen months ago, I was doing our taxes, the way I always did, and I noticed a monthly payment from one of the company accounts to a nursing facility in Massachusetts. My husband had been paying for Paul’s care. Quietly. Not out of guilt. Because if Paul ever complained, it would come out.

I drove to Massachusetts. I sat with Paul for six hours. He told me everything. Then I hired a lawyer, and Paul hired the same one, and we started documenting.

The investigation that froze my husband’s accounts wasn’t mine. It was Paul’s. I just gave his lawyer the bank records.

My husband sat down on my couch. For the first time in twenty years, he didn’t have anything to say.

The case took fourteen months. The court restored Paul’s half of the company, with damages. My husband’s share went toward paying them. I got the divorce he laughed at, and half of what was left.

I still visit Paul. He’s back in Boston now, in his own apartment, walking with a cane. He sends me a postcard from every place he travels. The last one was from Lisbon. On the back, he wrote: “Came back to finish the vacation. Doing better this time.”
