My Husband’s Ex-Wife Accidentally Sent Me A Photo Of My Son’s Graduation β€” But He Wasn’t In The Picture (PART 2)

…he didn’t want you to find out like this.”

The friend, Pete, explained what he knew. Twenty-three years ago, two years into our marriage, Tom had a brief affair with his ex-wife, Laura. She became pregnant. When the baby was born, Laura suffered a severe postpartum crisis and was hospitalized. Tom took their newborn son, Jake, home from the hospital, to Laura’s parents’ house, and cared for him there for the first month, telling me he was on a long work assignment. Then Laura’s parents took over.

I was pregnant with our son, Ryan, at the same time. Tom never told me about Jake. He sent child support every month for twenty-two years and visited him in secret.

Ryan found out three years ago, when Jake contacted him on social media. They were half-brothers, born four months apart. They became close friends. They even ended up at the same university.

That’s why Ryan didn’t want a graduation party. Jake was graduating the same day, from the same school, in the same ceremony. Ryan couldn’t stand on that stage and pretend he didn’t have a brother in the next row. And he couldn’t tell me without breaking our family apart.

I asked Tom and Ryan to sit down with me. Tom finally told me everything. I was furious with him for twenty-four years of lying. I was heartbroken for my son, who had been carrying his father’s secret.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” Ryan said. “I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“You weren’t supposed to have to,” I said. “That was your father’s job.”

Tom and I are in counseling. I haven’t decided about our marriage. But at Christmas, Ryan asked if Jake could come to dinner. I said yes. He brought me flowers and said, “I’m sorry you found out this way.” So was I. But I’m not sorry I met him.
