MY HUSBAND’S GPS TOOK ME TO THE WRONG HOUSE (PART 2)

…”have a son together. Liam is six.”

The little boy was still standing in the doorway, looking up at me with my husband’s exact eyes.

“We’re not married,” the woman said quickly. “We never were. I’m Dana. I’m Liam’s mom. Liam calls you Daddy’s other wife because that’s how Greg explained it to him. He’s been planning to bring you here on Friday. For Liam’s birthday. He told me you knew about Liam. He told me you’d been the one who wanted to wait to meet him.”

I stood in her driveway, holding my car keys, with no idea what to say.

Dana invited me in. I don’t know why I went. She made coffee. Liam showed me his Lego spaceship. And Dana told me the whole story.

She and Greg had dated briefly, seven years ago. A few months before he and I met. She got pregnant. Greg panicked and disappeared. He didn’t show up for the birth. He didn’t pay child support for the first three years. Then, after he and I got married, something changed. He contacted Dana. He apologized. He started paying support. He started visiting Liam every other Saturday.

Every other Saturday, Greg told me he was at “the office catching up.”

“He told me you knew,” Dana said again, softly. “He said you weren’t ready to meet Liam yet. I believed him. I’m so sorry.”

The GPS address wasn’t a mistake. Greg had been at the office that day. He’d just copied the wrong address from his phone. Dana’s address was the one he typed every other week.

I drove home and waited for him. When he walked in, I said, “I met Liam today. He showed me his spaceship.”

Greg sat down on the stairs. He didn’t try to explain it away. He said he’d been ashamed. He’d abandoned his son for three years, and he was terrified that if I knew, I’d see him as the kind of man who abandons people. So he started over with Liam in secret, and kept putting off telling me, and every month it got harder.

“I was going to tell you on Friday,” he said. “I swear. I was going to bring you to his party and tell you everything.”

“You told Dana I already knew,” I said. “You made me the reason you hid him.”

He didn’t have an answer for that.

I was so angry I didn’t speak to him for a week. I stayed with my sister. I thought about leaving. I thought about all those Saturdays. The lies. The fact that I’d been made into a villain in a story I didn’t even know I was in.

But I also thought about a little boy with my husband’s eyes, showing me his spaceship, and calling me something nobody had ever called me before.

I went to Liam’s birthday party that Friday. I brought him a bigger Lego spaceship. Greg and I are in counseling now, and it’s been hard. Some days I’m still furious. But I told Greg one thing on the drive home from the party, and I meant it.

“You don’t get to hide your son from me ever again,” I said. “He’s part of this family now. And he’s going to know he always was.”

Liam spends every other weekend with us now. He still calls me Daddy’s other wife sometimes. I’ve decided I like it.
