I drove straight to the bakery and asked for the amended order. The baker handed me the printed copy without hesitation. My mother-in-law’s name wasn’t on it. Neither was my husband’s. The signature belonged to someone who had no reason to be changing our wedding arrangements at all — my maid of honor, who swore she’d never seen the document before. I asked the baker when the change had been made, and she pointed to the date. It was the same afternoon my mother-in-law had called me crying and said she was worried I was “too overwhelmed” to handle the wedding.
I took the order home and compared it with the original contract. The cake size, flavor, filling, and even the delivery instructions had all been changed. But there was one handwritten note at the bottom that wasn’t part of either order: “Bride must not be told about changes until after the cutting.” The baker said she’d assumed it was a request from the person who signed the amendment. I called my maid of honor again, and this time she went quiet. Then she admitted she’d given my mother-in-law access to the wedding binder weeks earlier because she thought she was helping. She hadn’t signed anything — but she knew exactly who had.
I confronted my mother-in-law that evening. She didn’t deny changing the cake. Instead, she said the allergy was “not that serious” and that she wanted to prove I was being dramatic about the wedding. Then she said something that made me realize the cake wasn’t the real issue: “You needed to learn that things don’t always go the way you plan.” I placed the amended order on the table and asked why she had forged my maid of honor’s signature. She finally admitted she had done it because she knew my husband would question any change made under her own name. Then my husband walked into the room, picked up the document, and said, “Mom, you just admitted you knew exactly what you were doing.”
