My Mother-in-Law Has Told My Children I’m Not Their Real Mother

My daughter turned around and asked her grandmother why she kept calling someone else her “first mummy” when I was the woman who had raised her since she was four. My mother-in-law immediately said she was only telling the truth. My daughter looked at her and said, “No, you’re telling a story about my life that you weren’t there to live.” The room went completely silent. My husband started to speak, but my daughter held up her hand and told him she wanted to finish.

She said she knew she had a birth mother, and nobody had ever lied to her about that. She also knew that woman had never contacted her, never visited, and had not been part of her life since the adoption. What she didn’t understand was why her grandmother kept bringing her up at birthdays, Christmas, and family gatherings. She said every time it happened, she felt like her grandmother was trying to make the person who raised her sound temporary. My mother-in-law began crying and said she never meant to hurt her.

Then my daughter said something I’d never heard her say before. She told her grandmother that being adopted didn’t make our relationship less real—it made the choice to become her mother more deliberate. She said, “You keep saying she’s my real mother because you think biology is the only thing that counts. But if that’s true, then what do you call the seventeen years you watched my mother love me?” My husband looked down at the floor. His mother couldn’t answer.

My daughter took my hand and stood up. Before leaving, she told her grandmother she could talk about her birth mother if she ever wanted to understand that part of her history, but she would never accept being told that I wasn’t her mother. Then she turned to me and said, “You don’t have to prove you’re my mother. I know who was there.” For the first time since 2011, my husband told his mother there would be no more warnings—if she couldn’t respect our daughter’s answer, she wouldn’t be given another opportunity to make her defend it.
