My Mother Sang in the Same Church Choir for 41 Years — Then She Suddenly Stopped and Never Told Me Why

For forty-one years, my mother never missed choir practice. Then in 2014, she simply stopped going. She wouldn’t explain what happened, and every time I asked, she changed the subject so quickly that I eventually stopped asking. What confused me most was that she continued sending money to the church every single month, even though she refused to step inside it again.

After she died, I found the canceled checks in her bank records. The payments had continued for years. At her funeral, something happened that made the whole thing even stranger: the entire choir showed up. They stood together in their robes, but nobody sang. I couldn’t understand why a group my mother had apparently wanted nothing to do with would come to say goodbye.

After the service, the choir director stayed behind and asked if she could tell me what had happened in 2014. She said my mother had made her promise never to discuss it while she was alive. Then she asked me whether my mother had ever mentioned a particular Sunday morning. I said no.

The director took a deep breath and told me that my mother hadn’t left the choir because she was angry with them. She had left because she’d discovered something about what had been happening behind the church doors for years. Then she handed me an envelope my mother had apparently asked her to keep until after her death. There was one sentence written across the front in my mother’s handwriting: “They told me I was the only one who knew.”
