A man knocked on my door during my father’s wake and asked me to confirm my name. Forty people were in my living room. My aunt was in the kitchen making coffee. He handed the papers to me on the porch and left, and I stood there in the cold reading a lawsuit filed by my own sister. She was suing me for the money our father gave me in 2017 to save my house. He gave it to her too. Same amount, same year.
Hers went toward a truck. Mine kept a roof over my kids. I didn’t say a word about it that night. But my aunt saw my face when I came back in, and she made me show her the papers. She read them twice and then asked me one question: “Did he give you that money in front of me?” I said yes. She went quiet, then walked into the kitchen and came back with an old envelope.
Inside was a copy of the check Dad had given my sister. Same amount. Same date. And on the back, in Dad’s handwriting, he had written what the money was for. My aunt had kept the copy because she was the one who drove Dad to the bank that morning. Then she showed me something else: a note Dad had written to himself after giving us both the money. It said that he had given each of his children the same amount and neither payment was a loan.
My attorney sent the documents to my sister’s lawyer. Two days later, they asked whether we could settle without going to court. My sister refused to withdraw the lawsuit, so we prepared everything for the hearing. Then my aunt gave us the final piece—a letter Dad had written to both of us in 2019, saying he hoped we’d never argue over the money because “I gave you the same thing because I love you the same.” When the judge saw it, he asked my sister why she was trying to recover money she had received herself. She had no answer. She just stared at the document and finally said, “I didn’t know he kept records.”
