MY STEPDAD KEPT A VOICEMAIL FOR 12 YEARS. THEN HE PLAYED IT AT HIS 60TH (PART 2)

…”seat. Jake fell and hit his head on the curb, and he’s not waking up right, and I’m scared, and I don’t know who else to call.”

Carl stopped the recording.

Brent had gone completely white. The whole room was silent.

My mom was staring at her son. “Brent,” she said. “What is this?”

Carl answered for him, very gently. “March fourth, 2012. 2:07 in the morning. Brent was sixteen. He’d snuck out to a party with his friend Jake. They’d been drinking. Jake fell on the way back to the car and cracked his head on the curb. Brent drove him to a gas station, because he didn’t know what else to do. He called me. Not his mom. Not his dad. Me.”

“I drove out there,” Carl said. “Forty minutes. There was blood all over the passenger seat. Jake was confused, slurring. I put both of them in my van, and I drove Jake to the ER myself. The doctors said he had a skull fracture and a brain bleed. Another hour, maybe two, and he wouldn’t have made it.”

My mom had her hand over her mouth.

“I sat in that waiting room with Brent until Jake’s parents came,” Carl said. “Then I drove Brent home and snuck him back in through the garage before his mother woke up. He begged me not to tell her. I promised I wouldn’t. And I didn’t. For twelve years.”

He looked at Brent.

“I didn’t play this to embarrass you,” he said. “I played it because tonight you said I didn’t leave anything behind. I wanted you to hear that I did. Jake’s alive. He’s a firefighter now. He has two kids. That’s what I left behind. I just never needed anyone to know.”

Brent didn’t say anything. He sat down hard in his chair.

“Why did you keep the voicemail?” I asked Carl. Later, when everyone was eating cake.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess I thought someday he might need to remember that he called me.”

Brent found Carl in the parking lot when the party was over. I watched from the doorway. He was crying. He hugged Carl so hard Carl’s glasses fell off.

“I’ve been doing a podcast for three years about men who build legacies,” Brent said, his voice muffled. “And I never once talked about you.”

“That’s okay,” Carl said. “You can do one now if you want. I’ll even come on.”

He did. The episode was called “The Man Who Came at 2 a.m.” Jake was on it too. It’s the most-listened-to episode Brent has ever made. At the end, Brent said, “This is my stepdad, Carl. He stocks vending machines. And I wouldn’t be here without him.”

My mom still listens to it once a month. She says she’s not upset that Carl never told her. She says it’s exactly why she married him.
