My Wife Has Been Friends With the Woman I Was Sleeping With for Four Years

My wife has been friends with the woman I was sleeping with for four years. I introduced them at a fundraiser because I thought keeping everything close would make it easier to control. I watched them exchange numbers and did nothing because stopping it would have required an explanation. They started texting, having lunch, and eventually my wife began calling her one of the good ones. Every time my wife spoke warmly about her, I knew exactly what she didn’t know. I had brought the woman I was betraying my wife with directly into her life and then watched their friendship grow.

The affair ended in 2022, but their friendship didn’t. I told myself that was actually better because nothing was happening anymore, so there was no reason to confess. I sat through eleven dinners with both of them and listened to my wife talk about how lucky she was to have such a loyal friend. She trusted this woman completely, and that trust became one of the reasons I kept silent. I knew that telling my wife would destroy something she genuinely valued. What I never admitted was that I wasn’t protecting her friendship—I was protecting myself from the consequences of ending the lie.

Last month, the two of them went away for a weekend at a spa my wife had been saving for. They came home Sunday night, but my wife walked into the house alone and put her bag down without saying anything. She looked at me for a long time and then asked whether I remembered the fundraiser where they’d first met. I knew immediately that something had happened during that weekend. Her friend had finally told her the truth. She had told my wife everything, including how long the affair lasted and the fact that I’d introduced them knowing exactly what I was doing.

My wife asked me whether it was true, and I said yes. She didn’t scream or throw anything; she just stood there looking at me as though she was trying to understand how someone she trusted could have done this. Then she asked why I’d let her become friends with the woman I’d been sleeping with. I told her I didn’t know how to stop the friendship without exposing myself. She nodded slowly and said, “So you let me build a friendship with someone who knew the worst thing about you, because telling me the truth would have been harder for you.” Then she picked up her bag, walked toward the door, and said the one thing I had spent four years making sure she’d never have the chance to say: “You didn’t just betray me—you chose the person who helped you hide it.”
