THE JARS BECAME SOMETHING I NEVER EXPECTED

The man smiled and asked whether I’d ever considered turning the garden into a real business. I laughed and told him I was seventy-two and had never thought of myself as a businesswoman. He said he wasn’t asking about a business exactly—he wanted to buy the land beside mine and build a small farm-to-table shop where my preserves would be the first products on the shelves. He had been one of the customers at the market, and his wife had been buying my jars every month since August. Then he showed me a folder containing photographs of my garden that someone had taken years earlier. They had been trying to find the person behind the preserves, and eventually my name kept coming up.

I told him I wasn’t interested in becoming wealthy from something I’d started for my children. He said that wasn’t why he came. He wanted to give me a place where I could keep doing what I loved without having to worry about whether anyone wanted the jars. I agreed to visit the property, and when I arrived, there were shelves already built along one wall with a small handwritten sign above them: “From Her Garden.” I asked who had told him about the story behind the jars, and he said my son had. Apparently, my son had been quietly telling everyone that his mother made the best preserves in the county.

The shop opened the following spring, and I brought the first forty jars myself. They sold before lunch, but this time I didn’t feel like I was trying to prove anything. My children came that afternoon, and for the first time in years, all three of them stood in my garden together. My son apologized for what he had said on that Tuesday, and I told him I understood why he thought the jars weren’t needed anymore. Then I handed each of them a jar and told them they could take one home or leave it for someone who needed it more. I started making those jars because I thought my children were waiting for them—and ended up discovering that hundreds of strangers had been waiting instead.
