THE MAN WHO CAME TO PICK UP OWEN (PART 2)

…”it’s my brother. And he does whatever I tell him. So let’s make this easy. Go get Owen.”

For eleven years I’d had a little button under the front desk that I’d never pressed. My hand found it without me even looking. Then I smiled at him and said, “Of course. Let me just pull up his classroom.”

The button sends a silent alert to the district office and the police, and it puts the whole school into a lockdown. Down the hall, I heard Owen’s teacher close her door and lock it. Every door in the building did the same, quietly, one after another, the way we practice every month.

I kept typing on my keyboard, slowly. I asked him to spell his last name. I asked him which classroom Owen was in, even though I knew. I asked if Owen had a jacket. He answered every question patiently, watching his phone.

While he talked, I wrote Owen’s mother’s license plate from her file on a sticky note and slid it under the glass to our principal, who’d come up behind me. She read it, nodded, and stepped back into her office to call 911 directly.

Four minutes. That’s how long it took for the first patrol car to pull into our parking lot. I’ll never forget the moment he saw the lights in the window behind me. He didn’t run. He just lowered his phone.

Officers stopped Owen’s mother’s car on the highway about ten minutes later. His brother was in the back seat. She’d picked him up thinking he was coming to help her talk to the school. Both men were arrested, and she wasn’t hurt.

Owen spent the whole lockdown sitting under a table with his class, reading a book about sharks. He thought it was a drill.

His mother came to the front office the next morning. She didn’t say anything at first. She just pressed her hand flat against the glass, and I pressed mine against it from the other side. Owen tugged on her sleeve. “Mom, did you know a great white can smell blood from a mile away?” She laughed until she cried.
