“The Part Where He Says…”

Owen let the silence stretch before he hit play again. Daniel’s voice filled the kitchen, tinny through the phone speaker: “…I still think about the ring, Jess. I know you’re married now, but if you ever want to talk, really talk, call me back.” Owen set the phone down like it had gotten too heavy to hold. “Three weeks I’ve had this voicemail,” he said. “Three weeks of watching you leave the room to text your ‘friend going through a divorce.’ So — how bad is it, Jess?”

I told him everything — the four months, the burner phone, the meetings timed around his business trips. I watched something in his face close like a door as I spoke, and I understood I wasn’t confessing to save the marriage anymore. I was just finally being honest, four months too late for it to mean anything. “I need you to leave,” he said quietly when I finished. “Not because I’ve figured out what happens next. I just can’t be in a house where I don’t know which version of you is real.”

I’ve been staying at my sister’s for two weeks now. Owen filed for divorce last Tuesday. Daniel called once, and I didn’t pick up — turns out I wasn’t as sure about him as I’d told myself for four months. Mostly I’ve just been sitting with the fact that Owen knew for three weeks and said nothing, waiting to see if I’d choose honesty on my own. I didn’t. And now I have to live with what that says about me, longer than I ever had to live with the lie.
