Somebody’s been paying my property taxes since 2019, and the county won’t tell me who. I only found out because I overpaid and they sent me a refund I couldn’t explain. For six years, the payments had arrived every November, always in cash and always at the same window. The treasurer said payments weren’t confidential but the people making them were, which she said in a way that made it clear she’d been instructed not to discuss it. She did tell me one thing, quietly, as I was leaving: the person always asked for the same clerk.
The clerk had retired in 2022, but apparently still came in every November. I asked the treasurer why a retired employee would be handling property tax payments, and she said he wasn’t handling them officially. He simply sat at the same window and accepted the cash when the person came in. I asked what the payer looked like, but she refused to describe them. Then she told me the retired clerk had left a note in the file before he stopped working. She said the note had my name on it and one instruction: “Don’t let the owner know who is paying.”
I found the retired clerk’s number and called him that evening. He sounded nervous when I mentioned the property, but he agreed to meet me the next morning. He told me the first payment had been made shortly after my father died, and the person had specifically asked whether the property was still in my name. I asked why they cared, and he said he didn’t know. Then he reached into an old folder and pulled out six handwritten receipts, one for every year. The signature on each receipt was different, but the handwriting underneath the signatures was exactly the same.
I asked him whose handwriting it was, and he wouldn’t answer at first. Instead, he handed me the oldest receipt and told me to look at the address written on the back. It was the address of a house my family had owned before I was born. I recognized the handwriting immediately because it belonged to my mother. She had died twelve years ago. The retired clerk finally looked at me and said, “Your mother told me that if she ever stopped coming, someone else would take over the payments.”:::
