The Photograph My Mother Couldn’t Stand to See

My mother took a photograph off my wall and broke it over her knee at my housewarming. There were twenty-two people in the house, and she’d been there eleven minutes. It was a picture of my grandmother and me, and she snapped the frame, dropped it on the floor, and said the thing she’d clearly come to say in front of everybody. “You bought this with her money and you know it.” My grandmother left me nineteen thousand dollars in 2019, while my mother got the house, the car, and the land.

Nobody in that room moved. My mother had spent six years telling the family that I’d emptied an old woman’s accounts and then pretended the money was an inheritance. I had never argued because my grandmother had specifically told me not to discuss her finances with anyone. Then my aunt put down her plate and walked to the middle of the room. She looked at my mother and asked why she had never mentioned the second account. My mother went completely still.

My aunt said she’d been the one who helped my grandmother update her will. She had seen every account, every statement, and every withdrawal. The nineteen thousand dollars had never come from my grandmother’s savings account. It had come from an account my mother had opened using my grandmother’s name years earlier, and my grandmother had discovered it shortly before she died. She had moved the money into a separate account in my name because she wanted it out of my mother’s reach. Then my aunt told everyone there was something my grandmother had left behind that proved it.

She reached into her purse and pulled out a sealed envelope with my mother’s name on it. My grandmother had written the date on the front and instructed my aunt not to open it unless my mother ever accused me publicly of stealing from her. My mother tried to take it, but my aunt stepped back and opened it herself. Inside was a bank statement, a copy of the original will, and one handwritten page. My aunt read the final sentence aloud: “If she ever tells them he stole from me, show them who actually did.”
