The photographer put her camera down and asked my sister-in-law to step away from the group. She said the family had hired her to photograph the wedding, not to direct it, and that my daughter had specifically asked her to make sure nobody was excluded from the formal pictures. My sister-in-law laughed and said she was only trying to help because she knew the family better. The photographer looked at me and asked whether I wanted her to continue arranging people. I said no, and for once I didn’t soften it with an apology.
My sister-in-law walked away, visibly annoyed, and the photographer gathered everyone again. She placed me beside my daughter and her husband, then moved my son next to us. When she checked the first few shots, she frowned at the screen. She said there was something strange about the family photographs she had seen earlier because the same people seemed to be repeatedly positioned at the edges. I asked what she meant, and she said it looked deliberate rather than accidental. Then she showed me a picture from my son’s graduation that I had never seen before.
I was standing in the photograph, but only half of me was visible behind another person. The photographer had apparently received the full original image from my son while preparing for the wedding. She said she had assumed it was a cropping mistake until she compared it with another photograph from my wedding. I was at the edge there too, partially blocked by someone who wasn’t even supposed to be in the shot. My sister-in-law had been standing directly behind the photographer in both pictures. I suddenly understood why there were hundreds of photographs of my life in which I was somehow never quite in the picture.
That evening, my daughter sent me the entire folder from the professional photographer. There were dozens of photographs of the wedding, including several I had never known existed. In almost every family photograph, my sister-in-law had tried to rearrange the group, but the photographer had ignored her instructions. One photograph showed all of us laughing, completely unplanned, and I was standing in the center beside my daughter. My daughter called it her favorite picture from the entire day. Then she told me something I hadn’t known: she had hired that photographer specifically because she didn’t want anyone else deciding who belonged in her photographs.
