THE POLICE OFFICER WHO WAITED SEVEN YEARS TO THANK A LOCKSMITH

She opened the envelope and pulled out a framed certificate from the NYPD Police Academy, and behind it, a printed transcript of a phone call. “My name is Officer Dana Morales,” she said. “Seven years ago, I was the woman locked in that bathroom. For twenty-two minutes, Leo stayed on the phone and taught me how to open my own back door with a bobby pin while my ex-boyfriend was breaking through the front.” She held up the transcript. “The 911 operator had me on hold. Leo didn’t.”

The room was completely silent. Anthony’s champagne flute stopped halfway to his lips. Dana turned to Leo. “You told me to breathe, count the pins, and not listen to the pounding. When I got out, I ran to my neighbor’s house. When I tried to pay you the next day, you said, ‘Pay it forward.’” She held up the certificate. “So I did. I graduated in June. I asked them to put your name in the dedication.”

Leo’s hand under mine wasn’t cold anymore. It was shaking. Then Dana turned to Anthony, and her voice got very calm. “You said you bill six hundred an hour to keep clients out of trouble. The man pounding on my door hired a lawyer who billed even more than that. Your brother charged me nothing, and he’s the only reason I lived to testify.”

Anthony put his flute down on the table. For a moment, I thought he would argue, because arguing is his profession. Instead, he looked at his older brother for a long time and said quietly, “Leo, why didn’t you ever tell me?” Leo just shrugged. “You never asked what I do at three in the morning, Ant.”

Dana stayed for dessert. Before she left, she gave Leo a small brass key ring with her badge number engraved on it. He keeps it on his work ring now, between the master keys. And Anthony, the corporate attorney who arrived in a rented limousine, asked for a ride home in Leo’s van. I heard him in the passenger seat the whole way back to Brooklyn, asking about every door his brother had ever opened.
