My mother-in-law’s recipe box has a card in it in my handwriting for a dish I’ve never made. It’s my hand, my loops, even the way I write a seven. The recipe is my grandmother’s, and my grandmother died before I ever met this family. I’ve had that box since the funeral in 2021, and I’ve gone through it four times and never turned that card over.
There was writing on the back. It was a date and four words, and the date was a week before my wedding. The four words said, “Ask him about the kitchen.” I stared at the card for a long time because my husband had never heard me mention that recipe. I called his mother’s sister, the only person still alive who had known my mother-in-law well, and asked whether she knew anything about it. She told me to come over alone.
She had an old photograph waiting for me. It showed my grandmother standing in a kitchen I didn’t recognize, holding the same recipe card. Beside her was a much younger version of my mother-in-law, even though they supposedly never met. I asked how that was possible, and she said the family had been told not to talk about that photograph. Then she pointed to a date written on the back. It was three days before my wedding, exactly when someone had apparently placed the recipe card in the box.
I went home and asked my husband about the kitchen. He didn’t answer at first. Instead, he asked where I had found the card and whether anyone else had seen it. When I told him what was written on the back, he sat down and finally admitted that his mother had left him a sealed envelope before she died. He had never opened it because she’d told him to wait until after our wedding. He went upstairs, brought it down, and handed it to me. Inside was a photograph of my grandmother and my mother-in-law together, with a note underneath that said, “Your wife has been part of this family much longer than you think.”:::
