My husband looked at the two men and calmly said, “I made my decision years ago. I was just waiting for the right time to tell everyone.” One of them opened his briefcase and placed a thick folder on our kitchen table. Inside were documents showing that my husband had been quietly buying farmland around the village for almost a decade. The small fields everyone thought he rented were actually part of a much larger operation. He had also developed a new irrigation system that had caught the attention of an agricultural company overseas. I looked at him, completely stunned. He smiled and said, “I told you one day the hard work would mean something.”
Then the second man explained why they were there. The board wanted my husband to become the managing partner of the company that had been trying to acquire the land for years. They were offering him a position, a controlling share, and enough money to transform the entire village’s farming infrastructure. My husband hadn’t accepted because he wanted one condition written into the agreement: the local farmers couldn’t be forced off their land. The men had come to tell him the board finally agreed. I suddenly understood why he’d never bought expensive things or taken vacations. He wasn’t poor. He had been investing everything into something nobody could see yet.
That evening, my girlfriends came over for dinner. The same women who had once laughed about my muddy clothes were suddenly asking questions about the black SUV and the men in suits. I didn’t tell them anything. My husband simply placed the signed agreement on the table. The next morning, the village learned that the “ordinary farmer” had been offered one of the largest agricultural partnerships in the region. My friend who had told me to marry someone with ambition called me and said, “Why didn’t you ever tell us?” I looked out at the fields my husband had spent twenty years working and answered, “Because you only understood ambition when it came with a luxury car.”
