My Daughter Thought I Was Sick for Two Years — Then She Asked Why I Never Came to Her In-Laws’ Holidays

I told her I’d had a stomach bug because I couldn’t bear to tell her what had actually happened. She looked confused and asked why I’d never mentioned being sick before. I opened my laptop and showed her the two emails I’d kept for two years — one confirming that a car had been booked to collect me for her wedding at 11:01, and another showing that someone had cancelled it at 11:15.

She stared at the screen for a long time. I told her I’d been dressed and waiting that morning, watching the clock and expecting the car to arrive. It never did. By the time anyone realized I wasn’t there, the ceremony was already underway. When she called me three days later, still excited about her wedding, I couldn’t bring myself to destroy that happiness by telling her that someone had deliberately prevented me from getting there.

She asked who had booked the car and who had cancelled it. I pointed to the names in the emails. Her face changed immediately. “Mom, why didn’t you ever tell me?” I told her because I knew how much she loved that family, and I couldn’t stand the thought of being the reason she had to choose between me and them.

Then she asked why I still didn’t come to their holidays. I turned the laptop toward her again and opened another folder. Inside were two years of messages, confirmations, and one cancellation I’d never shown anyone. My daughter read the first page, looked up at me, and whispered, “They didn’t just keep you from my wedding, did they?”
