My Daughter Stopped Her Wedding When She Realized I Wasn’t There — Then She Asked Her Father One Question

At 3:10, my daughter called me from a bathroom, crying so hard I could barely understand her. She asked where I was, and I told her I was still at home. She went silent. She said she’d been looking at the accessible seating all afternoon and assumed I was simply running late. Nobody had told her I wasn’t coming. She had assumed her father had arranged everything.

Then she walked back into the ceremony in her wedding dress and stopped the entire wedding. One hundred and forty people were sitting there when she took the microphone and asked her father, “Where is my mother?” I heard the room go completely silent through the phone. He tried to answer, but his voice sounded different than it had all day.

She asked him again, this time louder. He finally said that I had “decided not to come” because I didn’t want to make the day complicated. My daughter immediately said, “That’s a lie.” She told everyone that she’d spoken to me that morning and that I had been excited to be there. Then she asked him why the accessible seat she’d specifically reserved for me had been empty.

He didn’t answer. My daughter stood there in her wedding dress, crying, and said something that made the entire room turn against him. “You didn’t just keep my mother from my wedding. You made me believe she abandoned me on the most important day of my life.” Then she looked toward the door and said, “Someone go get my mother. We’re not continuing until she’s here.”
