My husband’s mother stood up at the christening and started talking about how special the baby’s name was. She said it had always been a beautiful name in the family, and then she smiled at my sister-in-law and said they had “another little one” carrying it now. A few people laughed, but I just sat there because I couldn’t believe she had actually said it out loud.
After the christening, my sister-in-law came over and joked that our baby and her dog were “name twins.” I told her I wasn’t angry, because the name belonged to my grandmother and I wasn’t going to let anyone turn something meaningful into a family argument. She looked relieved, then asked me again how we’d decided on the spelling.
I asked why she kept asking about the spelling when she’d already used it. She said she was just curious, but then she accidentally mentioned the exact message my husband had sent his mother back in March. The message included the name, the spelling, and the fact that we’d chosen it because of my grandmother. I hadn’t told my sister-in-law any of that.
That night, my husband checked his mother’s phone history. He found the message almost immediately — and then found something else. His mother hadn’t simply repeated our secret to his sister. She’d sent her the entire conversation, including the one sentence I’d specifically asked her never to share…
