When my records arrived, I opened them alone at the kitchen table. The first thing I noticed was that my husband’s claim wasn’t anywhere in them. My results were listed as within normal range for my age at the time, with one recommendation for additional testing. Then I found his file. His results were not clean. There was a note from the specialist saying he had been advised to return for further evaluation, and another note saying he had declined. I read that page three times before I understood what I was looking at.
I called the clinic the next morning and asked whether the records were complete. The nurse said yes, then paused and asked why I was surprised. I told her what my husband had said to my parents in 2016. She went quiet for a moment and said, “He was given the same explanation you were given. We never told him your results were abnormal.” Then she found something else in the archived notes: my husband had called the office twice after our last appointment, asking whether they could remove a particular test from my copy because he was “handling the paperwork for both of us.” They hadn’t removed anything. But he had never told me the test existed.
That evening I put both files on the table and asked him why he’d lied. He didn’t deny it. He said he couldn’t stand the thought of my parents knowing the problem might be his, so he told everyone it was me. I asked why he’d kept the lie going for six years after the clinic closed. He looked at the records and finally said, “Because by then, everyone already believed it.” I thought that was the worst thing he could say. Then I turned the last page of his file and saw a note dated two months after our final appointment: “Patient requests records be withheld from spouse.” And underneath it was his signature.
