MY HUSBAND USED OUR HELOC TO HELP HIS DAUGHTER — AND FORGOT I COULD SEE THE MESSAGES

The second message said, “Dad, she’s going to find out. You need to tell her before the lender does.” Right then Gary’s truck pulled into the driveway. I put the iPad back on the counter and waited. He walked in carrying a toolbox, kissed me like nothing was wrong, and started talking about his friend’s truck. I let him finish. Then I asked, “How much did you take from the HELOC?” His face changed immediately. He admitted Brooke had needed another deposit for an apartment, and he’d borrowed the money against our house because he knew I would never approve another lease. He said it was temporary and promised Brooke would pay it back.

I asked him why she was talking about a lender contacting me. He finally pulled out a folder from his truck. Brooke hadn’t rented another apartment at all. She had used the money as a down payment on a house. Gary had co-signed the mortgage and used our HELOC for the closing costs without telling me. Worse, Brooke had already missed two payments, and the lender had sent notices to the address we shared. Gary had been hiding them in his truck. I looked at him and said, “You didn’t just help your daughter. You put our house behind her promise to pay.”

The next morning I called the bank myself and learned exactly what had been signed. The HELOC was secured against our home, but Gary couldn’t increase the balance without my authorization. The bank froze the additional borrowing and told us what paperwork would be needed to protect the account. Brooke called that afternoon, furious that I’d “made everything harder.” I told her she could keep the house if she could afford it, but our home was never going to be the collateral for another decision she made without us. Gary didn’t argue this time. He sat at the kitchen table, staring at the iPad that had exposed everything, and finally said, “I should have told you.” I answered, “You should have asked me before you risked the roof over my head.”
