My mother sat across from me and told me she’d kept the truth because she couldn’t bear to make me feel worse. In 2018, my mother-in-law had called her and said her son had been tested and that I was the reason we couldn’t have children. My mother believed her because I had already spent years blaming myself. She never told me, but she did something quietly afterward that I didn’t understand until now: she asked for a copy of every fertility record I had from that year.
I went through the old paperwork with her and found a letter I’d never seen. My mother had written to the clinic after my mother-in-law’s call, asking whether my husband had actually been tested and whether the results matched what she’d been told. The clinic couldn’t discuss his records with her, but they confirmed that nothing in my file showed that I was the cause of our fertility problems. My mother kept that response in a folder for six years because she said she wanted proof before ever telling me. Then she handed me another document—one my husband had never known she had.
It was a copy of a test order dated months before the phone call. His name was on it. So was the doctor’s recommendation that he complete additional testing. There was no result attached. My mother looked at me and said, “I think that’s why his mother called me before you ever knew there was a test.” I asked whether she thought my husband had hidden the results. She shook her head and said, “I don’t know.” Then she turned the page and showed me the note she’d written on the day she received that call: “If she ever finds out what they did, she needs to know I tried to protect her.”
