THE EYE EXAM I NEVER HAD WAS UNDER MY NAME — AND SOMEONE ELSE HAD BEEN SEEING MY DOCTOR FOR YEARS

I asked her to read me the address, and she said it was on a street in Delaware, Ohio, with the same last name as mine on the mailbox. I drove there that afternoon because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. A woman answered the door, maybe ten years younger than me, and the moment she saw me her face changed. I asked whether she knew my name. She said, “I know the name on the paperwork.” I asked who had been bringing her to the eye doctor. She said a man had been doing it since 2022, and he’d always told the office he was my son. I told her my son had never been to that office with me. She looked at me for a long time and said, “He told me you knew.”

I called the eye doctor’s office from my car and asked them to check every appointment under my name. There were five visits, not one, all with the same man listed as the person accompanying me. The receptionist read me the dates, and the first four were while I was living two states away with my sister. The fifth was the October appointment when the woman had apparently gotten new glasses. I asked whether anything had been purchased. She said yes — progressive lenses, paid through my insurance, and a second pair ordered a week later. Then she said something that made me write everything down: the prescription had been electronically sent to a pharmacy in Delaware, and the person picking it up had used my insurance card.

I asked who the man was. She couldn’t give me his name, but she could tell me the relationship he’d claimed. Son. I called my actual son and asked whether he’d ever taken a woman to an eye doctor in Marion. He said no, then asked why I was asking. I told him someone had been using my identity and insurance. He went quiet and said there was something he’d never told me. For the last three years, a woman had been calling him from an unknown number, asking whether his mother was still living at the same address. He’d assumed it was a scam and ignored her. Then he found the old voicemail and played it for me.

It was the same woman’s voice.

And she wasn’t asking about me.

She was asking whether I still remembered the name she was born with.
