My Ex-Husband Told Everyone I “Wouldn’t Want the Fuss” of Attending Our Son’s Wedding — Then My Fifteen-Year-Old Granddaughter Came to My Door

She sat beside me in her bridesmaid dress and handed me her phone. On the screen was a message from her father telling her not to worry about me because I had “chosen not to come.” She looked at me and said, “Grandma, I know you didn’t choose this.” Then she showed me the family group chat. Everyone had been told that I was staying home because I didn’t want attention or special treatment.

I told her I hadn’t spoken to her grandfather in six years, but I had been ready all day. My dress had been hanging on the closet door since January. I’d had my hair done. I had sat in my wheelchair from eleven in the morning until nine at night because I kept believing someone would come for me. I couldn’t bring myself to take the dress off because doing that would mean admitting that my own son had actually left me behind.

My granddaughter started crying and told me she had asked her father where I was. He’d simply repeated that I “wouldn’t want the fuss.” She said she knew that wasn’t true because she’d watched me get ready for months. Then she opened another message — one I’d never seen — where her father had told someone not to arrange transportation because I had already said I wasn’t coming.

She stood up, still wearing the dress she’d worn for the ceremony, and said, “Then we’re going back.” I told her the wedding was already over. She shook her head and said she didn’t care. She had something else on her phone that she wanted me to see first — a photograph she’d taken during the reception, and when I saw who was standing beside my empty chair, I finally understood why my son had been so determined that I never make it there…
